Follow this five-part formula to get sharp portraits every time

Getting tack-sharp portraits can be a real struggle, and many factors contribute to blurry shots. In her recent video, Chelsea Nicole shares her five-part sharp focus formula to help you capture crisp, razor-sharp portraits every time.

#1 Shutter speed is key

The foundation of sharp images lies in your shutter speed. A slower shutter speed lets in more light but increases the risk of blur. For sharp portraits specifically, Chelsa suggests you aim for the following:

1/60 s or slower: Best for stationary subjects in low light conditions. Use with wider lenses (like 50mm or 35mm) to minimize camera shake.

1/125 s or faster: Ideal for most daylight situations, moving subjects, and longer lenses (like 100mm or 70-200mm).

#2 Invest in high-quality lenses

While it might be tempting to spend all your money on the fanciest camera, the truth is that higher-quality lenses can significantly impact your image sharpness. After all, a camera isn’t that important, especially if you’re new to photography. While you don’t need to break the bank, investing in a few good lenses will pay off in the long run. Start with one or two and gradually build your collection as your budget allows.

#3 Master autofocus modes

Choosing the right autofocus mode is crucial for consistent sharpness. Here’s a quick breakdown:

Single Shot AF (AFS): Perfect for stationary subjects, locking focus when you half-press the shutter.

Continuous AF (AFC): Ideal for moving subjects, tracking and adjusting focus as they move.

Practice switching between these modes to adapt to different shooting situations so that you can get the best results no matter the context of your shoot.

#4 Nail your focus point

Selecting the correct focus point is often overlooked but essential for sharp images. Chelsea suggests using single-point focus mode and choosing the maximum number of focus points available on your camera. This gives you precise control over where the camera focuses, preventing unintended areas from being sharp.

#5 Understand the focus plane

The plane of focus is an imaginary plane through your image where everything is sharp. It’s determined by your focus point and camera angle. When shooting multiple subjects, understanding the plane of focus is crucial to ensure everyone is in focus.

Bonus Tip: Work on your post-processing

Even with perfect in-camera settings, post-processing can still enhance sharpness. Of course, be careful not to oversharpen your images! You’ll find some useful tips, tricks, and tutorials for sharpening on the links below:

By mastering these five essential elements, you’ll be well on your way to capturing consistently sharp portraits. I know it may sound overwhelming at first, but take it step by step, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and remember that practice is key!
