TikTok is adding Group Chats, which will support up to 32 people per chat. The social network announced the highly requested feature on Monday. It allows the group to watch, comment, and react to videos together in real time on the platform. It also comes with a few safeguards: it’s not available to those between the ages of 13 and 15. Everyone, including teens ages 16-17, can also only be added to a Group Chat by their friends, which TikTok defines as someone who follows you that you also follow. So, you won’t get accidentally added to conversations with randos you don’t know. That’s not to say you can’t be in a group chat with folks you don’t know, only that you can’t get added to one by a stranger. Beyond being added, you can also join group chats using a shared link; however, TikTok has some built-in safeguards for teens. They won’t be able to join those chats unless they have at least one mutual friend in the chat.Teens who create a Group Chat will have to approve each person who joins.Muting and blocking tools will work in Group Chats as normal, and messages within a chat can be reported, as can the entire chat if someone feels like it violates TikTok’s Community standards.
