Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the most censored political party of them all?Republicans have long complained about alleged censorship on social media, from Facebook’s Trending Topics debacle in 2016 to accusations of “shadow banning” on Twitter two years later. Now it’s the Democrats who have a bone to pick with the platforms. As Engadget reports, Rep. Jerry Nadler, a New York Democrat and ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, wrote a letter to Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH), requesting an investigation into election-related misinformation being published by the Grok AI chatbot on X.Grok wrongly told people that Vice President Kamala Harris missed the deadline to be included in the presidential race in nine states. That prompted five Secretaries of State to request that X filter any election-related questions through CanIVote.org, which ChatGPT already does.”Protecting American voters from election misinformation propagated in the ‘town squares’ of society squarely falls within [the committee’s] sacred duty,” Nadler argues.Nadler also points to the White Dudes for Harris X account, which has been labeled as spam and was locked during a live fundraising call, CNN reports. Nadler suggests this was done “for partisan gain,” as X owner Elon Musk supports Donald Trump. X hasn’t commented. In addition, Nadler calls out X for pulling back on content moderation, saying that “with less than 90 days remaining until the election, we no longer have the luxury of time to wait for X to do the right thing on its own accord.” The congressman cites “egregious falsehoods,” conspiracy theories, and other harmful posts, including an X post with 13 million views that said President Biden was dying, citing an unnamed “medical source.”

Nadler urged Rep. Jordan to “join me in ensuring that X does not pay lip service to principles that it does not follow in practice.”Nadler wants information on Grok’s inaccuracies, X’s current misinformation policies, details on certain account suspensions, and whether Musk sharing a deepfake video of VP Harris violates the platform’s rules. Jordan hasn’t commented, though he did champion the shutdown of an advertising group sued by X over ad boycotts.

About Joe Hindy
Contributor
Hello, my name is Joe and I am a tech blogger. My first real experience with tech came at the tender age of 6 when I started playing Final Fantasy IV (II on the SNES) on the family’s living room console. As a teenager, I cobbled together my first PC build using old parts from several ancient PCs, and really started getting into things in my 20s. I served in the US Army as a broadcast journalist. Afterward, I served as a news writer for XDA-Developers before I spent 11 years as an Editor, and eventually Senior Editor, of Android Authority. I specialize in gaming, mobile tech, and PC hardware, but I enjoy pretty much anything that has electricity running through it.
