Apple is adding a handy feature to the iPhone’s native Camera app: a dedicated option to pause video recordings. While unveiling the iPhone 16 lineup yesterday, Apple spent quite some time explaining major camera upgrades, such as the new Camera Control button, the ability to shoot 4K videos in 120 frames per second on iPhone Pro models, and its built-in image processing capabilities, among others. What Apple didn’t highlight, but was spotted by 9to5Mac, is the addition of a pause button for video recordings in the Camera app. The feature is currently rolling out to testers via iOS 18’s Release Candidate, or early release, version (build code 22A3354). It will be available on all iPhones with iOS 18 starting Sep. 16. Once you start recording a video in iOS 18, you’ll find the white pause button next to the familiar red start/stop button.

Tapping the pause button will halt the recording, display a “paused” label near the timestamp, and change the button’s color to red. You can tap the same button again to resume recording or tap the stop button to finish recording and save the video.

The new button opens up quite a few possibilities. Pausing lets you capture multiple cuts, zoom in or out, adjust the focus, and more in a single recording. This reduces the need for video-editing software because the framing can be changed when the video is paused, for example.Notably, while testing, we found that Apple is yet to add the ability to switch between rear and front cameras. That means if you begin recording with the rear camera, pausing doesn’t display the option to use the front.
