If we can rely on anyone to bring us teardowns of the newest cameras, it’s the team at Kolari Vision. This time, it’s the recently released Canon EOS R5 Mark II ($4,299). The EOS R5 Mark II is the next evolution of the company’s EOS R5, released in 2020.
The EOS R5 also had a quick teardown to try and resolve some early overheating issues it experienced. Hopefully, there’s no overheating issues on the EOS R5 Mark II, but it’s always good fun to take a look inside new cameras to see how they tick.
Canon EOS R5 Mark II
The Canon EOS R5 Mark II, Canon says, is designed with performance and image quality at its core. Over the original EOS R5, it boasts improved autofocus, a new, longer-lasting battery, and more video options, particularly for Canon’s 3D VR lenses.
It features a new 45-megapixel full-frame back-side illuminated sensor, capable of shooting 8K raw video at up to 59.94fps. A 30fps continuous shooting mode for stills is also available, thanks to the fast readout of its electronic shutter.
One of the things Kolari wanted to see when tearing down the EOS R5 Mark II was how Canon had addressed the original’s overheating issues. The team was surprised to see there was no fan or any active cooling of any kind. It’s just passive vents, thermal pads and heatsinks.
It will be interesting to see how well it performs in overheating tests once it gets into the hands of more people. I’d be keen to see it tested side-by-side with the original EOS R5 and also to see if any of those strange camera cooling contraptions actually help.
For now, we’ll just have to settle for seeing its guts splayed out on the desk.
