Hollyland opens up about the new Pyro wireless video transmission system

Hollyland’s Mars video transmission system has been around for a few years now. They’ve proven to be very popular, and very reliable. They’ve certainly been rock solid for me. But time waits for no man, and now Hollyland has a new system.

Earlier this year, Hollyland launched its new Pyro system with the release of the Hollyland Pyro H ($369) HDMI video transmission system. It was then expanded with the Pyro S for SDI ($449) and the Pyro 7 transceiver monitor ($549). We caught up with Hollyland at IBC 2024 to find out more about the system.

Hollyland Pyro H, Pyro S and Pyro 7

The Hollyland Pyro H provides 4K 30fps (and 1080p60) video transmission up to a distance of up to 400 metres. It uses 2.4GHz and 5GHz dual-band technology to maximise its range and minimise interference. The transmitter is capable of sending to up to 4 receivers simultaneously, with only 60ms latency.

The Pyro H transmitter features both HDMI input and output for loop-through. So, you can plug the camera into the Pyro H and then from the Pyro H into a field monitor. The receiver offers the expected HDMI output but also provides UVC streaming over USB-C.

The Pyro S offers mostly the same specifications as the Pyro H. How the two systems differ is largely down to the ports they offer. The Pyro S adds SDI to the system, although you still get HDMI, too. The transmitter features both HDMI and SDI inputs – which means there’s no loop-through, so you’ll want to go into your monitor first if you’re using one on-camera. The receiver offers HDMI and SDI output.

Then there’s the Pyro 7. This is a 7″ wireless transceiver monitor using the same technology as the other Pyro devices. The 7″ touchscreen display offers 1200nits of brightness for use outdoors with both HDMI and SDI inputs and outputs.

The Pyro 7 also provides recording capabilities. It’s not quite ProRes RAW, and there are some limitations, but the Pyro 7 allows you to record up to 40 minutes of video internally to an SD card. The SD card can also be used to transfer LUTs to the unit when shooting.

The Pyro system has grown very quickly since its launch less than six months ago. With three new models, Hollyland has already covered the majority of users, and I expect future products will expand the capabilities even further to cater to more types of users.
