The GeForce 40-series of graphics cards bring significant performance improvements over the 30-series range; this differs from SKU to SKU of course, with some cards offering more substantial uplift, but when you factor in the technological improvements besides just raw power, they’re all noticeably superior compared to the previous generation. Compared to the GeForce 20-series, the latest range absolutely blows them out of the water. The increase in raw power Of the first raft of releases the RTX 4060, RTX 4070, and RTX 4080 showed substantial uplift over the previous 30s-series generation, with the Ti series increasing this further. Finally, the 40-series Super line came out in Q1 2024: some of these cards (such as the RTX 4080 Super) were very similar in performance terms, however were available for cheaper. On average, the RTX 4060 (8GB) performs approximately 20% better in games at 1080p/1440p resolution than the RTX 3060 (8GB) before it, and was available for $30 cheaper on launch, plus has greater power efficiency. Similarly the RTX 4070 is approximately 20% better than the RTX 3060 in games, and the RTX 4080 around 25% better than the RTX 3080 Ti in FPS terms. The RTX 4080 Super is only about 1-3% more powerful than the vanilla RTX 4080, but could be bought for $200 cheaper on launch. All of this is before you even factor in the benefits of frame generation. Support for the latest DLSS features In terms of frame generation, the 40-series cards fully supports the latest features of DLSS 3.0. The 30-series range and even the 20-series range do have DLSS, but neither to the extent of the newer range. Ultimately this means (when this feature is enabled) better FPS performance and/or graphics for free. Besides the performance improvements some games also have additional DLSS-powered graphical features. When playing Cyberpunk 2077 for instance, the DLSS graphical option, which uses advanced AI-rendering (only available to 40-series cards) is the only way you can combine Ray-Tracing with frame generation enabled and remove the kind of blurry effect you otherwise get (believe me, we’ve spent hours tinkering to try and otherwise resolve this to no avail). Power efficiency One of the most impressive things about the 40-series range is that all this processing performance is available for basically the same input cost in electricity, thanks to advances in the efficiency of the architecture. This not only helps save the planet but also your bank balance when that monthly energy bill comes in! Previous Next The best 40-series GPUs on a performance/price basis Although the premium flagship offerings often get a lot of the press attention with every release of a new GPU series, most consumers typically go for the mid-range or upper-mid-range options. Fortuitously, these were some of the best SKUs in the 40-series range in terms of the uplift from the previous generation, and also in terms of the processing power they are capable of producing per dollar spent. This compares favourably to offerings from other brands like the MSI GeForce RTX 4070 SUPER 12G VENTUS 3X OC, which costs £619.99 but still has a slightly lower 2505MHz clock speed. Although the Zotac GEFORCE RTX 4070 SUPER TWIN EDGE 12GB is available for a bit cheaper, this is a cheaper card with inferior cooling that isn’t overclocked – coming with a GPU clock speed of 2475 MHz.
