Sigma announces full-frame 28-105mm f/2.8 Art lens for E and L mount

Sigma has announced the 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN Art series lens ($1,499). Built for full-frame Sony E and Leica L mount cameras, the new lens is quite compact. And a lens with this sort of focal length range makes for a great walkaround lens.

It features High-Response Linear Actuator (HLA) autofocus, with optical performance that Sigma says “lives up to the standard of Art line lenses”. It has a lockable and de-clickable aperture ring with a weather-resistant design.

Sigma 28-105mm f/2.8 DG DN

With a 28-105mm focal length and a constant f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout, it’s a very versatile lens. Want to go shoot some landscapes or street photography? No problem. Put it in the 28-50mm-ish range. How about portraits? Well, that’s what the 50-105mm range is for.

Now, that’s obviously not all that it’s good for. Such focal length range offers a lot of possibilities for all kinds of subjects, without having to worry about losing light as you need to zoom in. It also has a constant 40cm minimum focus distance throughout its range, so you won’t need to move as you zoom, either.

The lens weighs 995g, which Sigma boasts as being “lightweight”. Sure, there are heavier lenses out there, but Sigma’s 24-105mm f/2.8 DG OS HSM ($895) for Nikon F and Canon EF DSLRs weighs 885g. And the new one doesn’t even offer stabilisation in the lens.

Still, I don’t think 995g is too much weight to have on a lens you’re walking around with all day – especially if it spends much of the day with the camera hanging from a strap on your shoulder.

There’s no word yet on whether we’ll see this come to Nikon Z or Canon RF mounts. I expect we may not. Although Sigma is now making Nikon Z and Canon RF mount lenses, Nikon and Canon get to say exactly which lenses Sigma is allowed to release for those systems.

So, I guess we’ll see.
