Tamron Introduces Nikon Z Version Of Its 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens

Tamron is expanding the brand range of its 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens by making a version of it available for the Nikon Z-mount.
The lens was previously available as an edition for Sony E-mount cameras since 2022 and is offered as a change from a more typical 100-400mm focal range.
The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD lens delivers an 8x optical zoom ratio that goes from a standard 50mm focal length for full-frame cameras but then extends out to pretty serious zoom at 400mm.
Despite this extensive range, the lens is relatively compact and light by the standards of any lens built to deliver a 400mm focal length. According to Tamron, this gives the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens superb versatility for many uses, such as wildlife photography, as the sample photo below showcases:

The 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens’s relative lightness and compactness are underscored by its specific dimensions. This model is only 18.58cm or 7.3 inches long and weighs 1.18 kg, or 41.6 ounces. Again, given its 50-400mm range, that’s pretty good.

Internally, the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens contains 24 elements in 18 groups with two eXtra Low Dispersion, three Low Dispersion, one Glass Molded Aspherical, and one Hybrid Aspherical lens element among those 24 glass elements.
According to Tamron, combining these elements and others lets this particular lens offer firm control against distortions and chromatic aberration.

This model is built with a 67mm front filter thread and a nine-bladed aperture diaphragm that can close down as far as f/23.
This new Nikon Z variant of the lens also includes Tamron’s own Vibration Compensation or VC mechanism. This proprietary technology from the brand reduces image blur by reducing the effect of lens and camera shake.
According to Tamron, the lens also uses AI technology to adjust compensation for video if used at a focal length of 100mm or lower.
Another useful feature of the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Lens that Tamron emphasizes is its BBAR-G2 Coating.
According to the brand,
“The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC also features Tamron’ss legendary BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2) Coating that minimizes ghosting and flares and expresses the minute details of subjects even under backlit conditions. No matter what circumstances you find yourself in, the 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC delivers clear and crisp images shot after shot,”

Externally, the lens is built with moisture-resistant sealing all over its body and includes an external AF/MF focus switch, a focus set button, a lock switch and a zoom ring rotation arc of 75 degrees.
Tamron is releasing the Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD for Nikon Z-mount cameras to retailers and buyers as of September 19, 2024, for $1,299. It’s available for preorder now though.
