Thypoch isn’t a name that anyone had heard of a couple of years ago. They entered the market in September 2023 with a clear focus on Leica users. The company’s launch also signified the launch of its Simera lens lineup. It kicked off with 28mm ($599) and 35mm f/1.4 ($599) lenses.
Now, a new lens is being added to the ranks. Naturally, it’s a 50mm f/1.4 lens. The Thypoch FF Simera 50mm f/1.4 ($749) follows suit with the other two lenses, targeting Leica M users. But other modern mirrorless mounts are likely.
Thypoch Simera – Filling out the lineup
The new Thypoch Simera 50mm f/1.4 joins the 28mm f/1.4 and 35mm f/1.4 lenses in the Simera lineup. I expect there are still some more lenses to go, but the Simera range is starting to shape up quite nicely.
Sure, they won’t help the long-range snipers shooting sports or wildlife, but not everyone needs that. For street photography, events and general day-to-day usage, the 28-35-50 combo of primes is a good one to have.
The new Simera 50mm f/1.4 lens is only being released for Leica M at the moment. The previous two lenses, however, were also initially launched for Leica M and then released for Nikon Z, Canon RF, Sony E and Fuji X mounts. So, I imagine we’ll see the new 50mm come to those at some point, too.
It has a minimum focus distance of 45cm for some moderately close portraits and such – although your subjects might look a little odd if you’re close. The company says its floating elements deliver “exceptional resolution” that betters its contemporaries.
